Anne Hathaway Says She’s Already Losing Roles to Younger Actresses

Anne Hathaway has revealed that at the age of 32, Hollywood has already branded her as an oldie. She believes younger actresses are snapping up her parts and she has less of a chance now. She says it’s very competitive and there are so many young women battling it out for the same few roles, so she isn’t surprised she is missing out:

“I hate to admit it, but it’s true – there are fewer roles and the competition is just as fierce as ever. I look around at my peers and I’m so blown away by their talent and their beauty and their cool style, as well as their ability to be an actress and be a movie star and be good at it. I mean, they’re so good and we’re all trying to get the same parts.”

Although it may be unfair and ageist, Anne says she once benefitted from being the hot young thang, so she can’t complain now. She says it’s just “the way things are” and she is just focusing on doing what she is able to do:

“I can’t complain about it because I benefitted from it. When I was in my early twenties, parts would be written for women in their fifties and I would get them. And now I’m in my early thirties and I’m like, ‘Why did that 24 year old get that part?’ I was that 24 year old once, I can’t be upset about it, it’s the way things are. All I can do right now is think that thankfully you have built up perhaps a little bit of cachet and can tell stories that interest you and if people go to see them you’ll be allowed to make more.”

She met Taylor Swift and she was impressed by the singer:

“She just seems to be following her heart. I met her – I hope it’s OK to say this – when she and Jake [Gyllenhaal] were together. She was 20 at the time, and we hung out one night. I was like, ‘You are a magnificent creature.’ She was on fire and I’ve watched her become this force of nature.”
