Selena Gomez Reveals She Had Chemotherapy, Discusses Body Shaming

The actress and singer was reportedly in rehab but now she has corrected those rumours, explaining that she was diagnosed with lupus and have to have chemotherapy. She adds that the condition was very serious and she was at risk. She opted to hide away until she was feeling completely better:

“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke. I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”

Selena admits that she has been body shamed by internet trolls and it made her lose some confidence in herself. She remembers being photographed in a bikini and that people branded her as overweight which really hurt her:

“I was in a bikini and got publicly ripped for being overweight. That was the first time I’d experienced body shaming like that. I believed some of the words they were saying. When somebody else has your self-esteem in their hands …”

She is shocked by people’s behaviour and doesn’t understand why people believe she deserves such negativity when she has only tried to be a positive role model. She was fuelled by the hate to create her ‘Revival’ album:

“I’m so f—ing nice to everybody, and everyone is so vile to me. I’ve been working since I was 7. I’ve been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17. It’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story. The hate motivated me.”

Selena has been leaning on good friend Taylor Swift for support and loves spending time with the Swift squad:

“Taylor makes me feel empowered, like I can trust new people. All of those girls are so dope. We ran around taking pictures, changing dresses, dancing — super-cliche girly stuff, but it rocked. The way she cares about women is so adamant. It’s pulling me out of my shell.”
