‘Game of Thrones’ script writer D. B. Weiss had secretly placed Monty Python jokes in the show’s script. Some of the words in George R.R. Martin’s books were used by the show’s developers to create various languages for the different groups featured – and Weiss decided to have some catchphases from the Monty Python films translated and inserted into the show. David J. Peterson, a linguistics expert who helps craft the shows languages, commented that the idea was “so hilarious that I had to do it”. He revealed:
“There’s a scene (in season four) where the Meereenese rider is challenging Daenerys’ (played by Emilia Clarke) champion. He’s shouting and Nathalie Emmanuel (her character Missandei) is translating – but she’s not translating what he’s saying. He’s actually saying a Low Valyrian translation of the French guy’s insults in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. That was Dan Weiss’ idea and it was so hilarious that I had to do it.”
Phrases such as: “Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries,” “Go boil your bottoms, son of a silly person!” and “I fart in your general direction!” are all included – although almost no one would have ever known!
